Are staff badges a good form of security and identity?

Staff badges have gained in usage over the last few years due the need for companies to review security procedures. Security is now an issue in almost all companies and in the public sector and these badges will be of great help in making for greater security measure.
The badges come in many different forms, some with photographs and some without. Clearly those with photographs give an added sense of security but unless the badge is laminated or the photo is embossed as say on a driving licence it will have little value.
Many companies now have swipe card system to increase the level of security and by adding a bar code to a staff badge the card then serves a double purpose. Many companies and public services are spread across multi sites and it is not possible for security staff to identify all people purely by their faces so having an identity card or name badge which can be presented to a swipe reader will give you access, and will allow security to know that you are an authentic employee.
In some companies access is limited to certain areas and to certain machines and the use of a staff badge acting as an identity card will allow you the appropriate access. Where confidential information is held on a computer a staff card may need to be inserted into the keyboard before access to the computer is possible.
It is important that a badge is not seen as the only form of security and identification but it will certainly be of assistance, thus they should be of a permanent nature. This means that they should either be metallic or of strengthened plastic and contain the company logo as an additional form of identification.
They will serve as identification when you are representing the company at external functions and also act as a form of promotion. The better the quality of the name badge the greater the image of the company. |
