Advice for using bird watching binoculars..

Binoculars are they key piece of equipment for any bird watching enthusiast. Binoculars enable identification and observation much more effective. However, the misuse of binoculars can lead to a number of problems. These problems include physical complaints such as headaches, eye tiredness and neck and back pain. Difficulties can also arise with the binoculars themselves if they are not cared for properly. A good pair of bird watching binoculars should include optics that focus well, are lightweight, usually less than 800 grams and provide a bright and clear view. When deciding on a pair of binoculars one of the most important things to consider is comfort. As you will be using them for long periods of time it is necessary to find a pair to suit your needs. Some binoculars are more appropriate for glasses wearers for example.

When looking at magnification, bird watchers tend to opt for binoculars between the ranges of 8x to 10x magnification. This is due to the environment the binoculars are used to bird watch in. For bird watchers who operate in their garden, woodlands or a local park an 8x magnification is probably the most appropriate as this type of bird watching binocular usually allows close focus. Paired with a larger objective diameter, for example, a 43-50 millimetre diameter will provide the user with a brighter image especially when the available light is poor. However, if you tend to bird watch by the sea, reservoirs or local marsh land then the birds will often be at a longer distance away. In this case you would benefit more from a higher power magnification. To prevent eye tiredness when using bird watching binoculars the correct eye relief; the distance between your eye and the lens of the optics, is very important.
