Trick Of The Light

There are many tricks to effectively lighting your home, many of which may not be entirely obvious. Lighting that is too bright can result in your decor looking garish, but if its too dull no detail will show and nothing will stand out. Ceiling lights are very effective in lighting an entire room well, but badly thought out lights can create shadows in unwanted places. It is important to therefore balance aesthetic look with functionality.

For example, a hallway or porch to your home needs to be well lit. An aesthetically pleasing light here can make it difficult to untie shoes in the depths of winter and might even make it seem like you’re trying too hard to impress. Modern ceiling lights can be very revealing of your home, but you have to balance this with necessity. Hallway lights will more than likely be in high use and will be depended on. The best way forward here is to experiment with bulb types and bulb strengths.

The kitchen is an easier room to deal with. For functional purposes a strong, uncluttered light is required, preferably modern ceiling lights with several light sources so you are never left in the dark in one of the most vital rooms in the house. Single tube lights can be effective, but when they burn out they can be difficult to replace, especially in the dark. A good idea is to install mood lighting for when the kitchen is not in use. This can create a very homely quality and, so long as there’s enough light to see, can turn your kitchen into a sociable place to be.

The living room often takes several forms of light. Since it may be the room you are in the most, light that enhances the ambiance will be preferred and your ceiling lights might only find use when you need the entire room lit, which might only be on rare occasions.
