Floor Screeding
|
Screeding is the process of pouring a carefully prepared mixture of sand and cement onto the layer of structural concrete and provides one of the last parts of the process before any final flooring such as flagging or tarmac is placed down.
The art of screeding is one which is taught and maintained to the highest standards and is strictly regulated by the building industry not only to maintain the high standards but to root out sub-standard contractors who might not only endanger clients with dangerous foundations from badly applied or mixed screed or make a mixture which becomes powdery on drying and can cause breathing and environmental difficulties.
In US terms a screed is the name of the tool which is used to provide a clean and smooth finish to a layer of concrete whilst the UK trade refers to screeding as the entire process of applying that smooth layer.
The amount of screed and the thickness with which it is applied will depend on the particular job and use of the surface in its finished stages as well as keeping in line with the thickness of the bricks or flags which will then go atop. Although there are no set values or ratio guidelines an experienced professional will be able to use their expertise to estimate based on previous practice.
There are two main methods used in the screeding process; pre-compacted and uncompacted and a tradesman will undoubtedly have a preference for either one of the two. Pre-compacted is the process when edging is used to give an indication of thickness, the material is then poured in and stamped down using either feet, shovels or any other special equipment favoured by the contractor. A screed board is then dragged over the surface to compact the mixture and allow the removal of any loose material
Pre-compacted screeding is a less simple method involving a time consuming trial and error process to gage the depth and amount of screed required and placed with a final layer then placed on top of the poured screed before it is all flattened and ready for the next phase.
