Cable ties are boon to all

Looking back the question is ‘what did we do before cable ties were thought about?’ String was sued to tie together cables or wires that were strewn across the office floor, or indeed the manufacturing floor, and of course over time the string would fray and break.

What are cable ties?

They are strips of plastic of varying lengths and widths and also strengths, which are used to tie together bunches of items that would otherwise be untidy, or at worst a health hazard. One end of the cable tie will have a locking device with teeth through which the other end is passed. This has a series of serrations along its length, and as the two interlock the cable tie cannot be undone. Not only does the tie act as a device to keep things tidy, but it also has a security aspect. They are manufactured from strong nylon.

Colours.

The ties will come in various colours and this allows for specific uses. The food and hygiene industry has adopted blue as the colour of choice, as this is deemed to be readily spotted amongst food items. In the engineering industry cable ties are used to group together cable of different machines by colour, or by electrical capacity. It allows for the cables to be designated as either three phase or single phase.

In hospitals it is essential that certain items be disposed of in a secure manner. Rubbish needs to disposed of in accordance with strict rules and regulations, and the bags are often secured with coloured cable ties, to ensure that correct disposal procedures are followed.

Motorcars.

Cable ties have a particular use in that they hold together the wiring loom and thus keep it from becoming loose and falling in to the moving parts.

Building sites.

On occasions it is necessary to hang sheeting from say scaffolding to give an element pf protection and a cable tie threaded through both elements will give security to the fixing.

As can be seen cable ties are a versatile and secure method of binding together items which otherwise would be loose and potentially dangerous.
