A commercial photographer is a photographer that is paid to take pictures for a particular purpose rather than taking pictures to create works of art. A commercial photographer will offer their services to various different people and businesses. They can take pictures for fashion for use in magazines, catalogues, newspapers and adverting materials. A commercial photographer is often employed to take pictures of still items such as foods and foods in packaging for supermarkets and manufacturers for editorial, packaging and advertising use. Large companies who require lots of products to be photographed on a daily basis may employ their own in house commercial photographer or they may use them on a contract basis as and when they are needed. Most commercial photographers would work on a contract basis so they can get experience in photographing lots of different subjects to build up their portfolio.
Other areas of work for a commercial photographer are to offer their services as wedding photographers. Weddings are big business today and there is lots of money to be made in this industry with couple’s paying particular attention to getting a fantastic commercial photographer to take the pictures of their special day. Many commercial photographers may work in a range of different areas as wedding work is predominantly on a weekend you still have the week free to work in other areas such as advertising work.
The police force will employ a commercial photographer to take pictures of crime scenes. This requires a very good photographer with a keen eye for detail as this is a very important job to make sure every piece of evidence is pictured accurately. A commercial photographer may also work with animals and focus their talents on wildlife photography. Whether this is to take pictures of people’s pets or to take photographs for wildlife sanctuaries, Zoo’s, or at sporting events such as horse racing and polo matches.
