Fruit packaging news: Unusual fruits you need to try
With healthy eating never far from the top of the news agenda in the UK, more and more people are watching what they eat. With recent research showing that even five a day may not be enough when it comes to fruit packaging and vegetable consumption. While the good old Granny Smith apple and the humble banana serve us well as the default choice of the British consumer, perhaps it is time to broaden your horizons. With that in mind, there are plenty of fruits which are delicious and good for you but haven’t quite broken through into the fruit packaging mainstream.
The dragon fruit has to one of the most attractive looking things in the fruit packaging industry. Brilliant red on the exterior with deep pink flesh and a black and white centre, the fruit otherwise known as the strawberry pear or pitaya boasts a delicate and slightly creamy taste and makes the ideal starting point for an exotic fruit salad. Found in central and South America as well as Asia, it is actually a member of the cactus family and texturally is not dissimilar to the kiwi thanks to its crunchy black seeds.
Doughnut nectarines and peaches are some of the more recent fruit packaging crazes, and although they don’t look quite as appetising as the dragon fruit (in fact resembling a shrivelled nectarine which has been crushed at the bottom of your rucksack) they have an exceptionally sweet taste. The lychee is another fruit packaging that has been gaining popularity recently. A few years ago the only place you would see lychees – grape-like in texture and size but with red rind – was in Indian restaurants but now they are popular in fresh and canned form. These can be accompanied in a special fruit salad by Kumquats, the small citrus fruit packaging which can be eaten raw with its fibrous skin on.
