The Price of Poor Health and Safety

Health and safety is not just a problem for construction sites and other hazardous environments. From the quietest office environment to the most dangerous jobs in the world, the need for a good knowledge of health and safety is still going to be important.

For example, it may actually be far more likely for an office employee to die in a fire than for a miner to die due to a cave in. Therefore, with that in mind, it is important that all companies, no matter who they are, are completely aware of how best to complete the relevant risk assessments. Whilst you can get health and safety consultants in to ensure that every angle is covered, the majority of businesses will still need someone on hand within the business who knows the relevant health and safety laws and can offer advice accordingly as and when processes evolve and change.

For instance, risk assessments alone cannot ensure that work is carried out in the right way and from erecting scaffolding to the level of light in an office, very simple oversights can mean that fines are likely.

The cost of training for staff and even the cost for bringing in health and safety consultants is going to be far less than the price that companies can pay should health and safety issues be overlooked. From the fines that companies face for a poor approach to safety to the major payouts and even potential criminal investigations that can arise from a major incident, the cost for companies who have overlooked certain safety issues can be extremely high.

The highest price of a very weak focus on health and safety could be death, but even in less extreme cases the financial cost and the damage to a company’s reputation can be great, and therefore simple training for the right members of staff could seem extremely work out in comparison.
