Man proves skills as fork lift truck driver

Many people use fork lift trucks on a regular basis as part of their work. These handy vehicles help individuals complete a range of tasks that would otherwise be impossible.
However, some people take their driving more seriously than others and one man to fall into this category is Gary Maher. According to reports in the Shields Gazette, the 36-year-old has become the north-east's champion driver of forklift trucks.
Meanwhile, his bid to reach the top of the discipline will not end there. On September 16th, he will compete with nine other region leaders to fight it out for the number one prize. Whoever secures first place at the fork lift trucks contest will win a new car and will be named RTITB Operator of the Year 2011.
RTITB, which describes itself as the largest training accrediting body in the UK and Ireland for forklift trucks drivers, operates in the UK and Ireland.
Commenting on his chances, the TNT mechanic said: "TNT put me through my training so that I could drive a forklift when I needed to, but I don't actually have to that often.
But I think that helps, because I haven't had a chance to develop any bad habits. I still drive as I was trained."
In order to get to the present stage, the father-of-three has had to pass a series of written and hazard perception tests, as well as practical driving assessments. One of these involved picking up a basketball with his truck.
Meanwhile, Mr Maher's line manager John Sinclair is hopeful that he has a good chance of securing victory. He remarked: "It's superb that he's got through, I'm really over the moon for him. It shows off his skills for other aspects of the business - his level of operation is brilliant."
He also revealed that he will allow Mr Maher some time during working hours to practice with the trucks before the big day arrives. |
