Incident shows importance of fork lift security

Many businesses rely on the use of fork lift trucks. Indeed, without such vehicles, their operations may quickly grind to a halt. This is particularly the case when heavy and cumbersome items have to be moved around.

However, unless businesses are extremely careful, they may find their forklift trucks are targeted by thieves, leaving them not only inconvenienced but also potentially out of pocket.

One example highlighting this point recently involved a truck worth £30,000. The vehicle was taken in broad daylight from a building site by a gang of organised and professional criminals, the Burton Mail reports.

Site manager for David Wilson Homes Kevin Fraser was leasing the truck at the time the incident happened. He had left the Castle Heights site at around 17:15 and a call was made to police just under half an hour later reporting suspicious activity.

In order to get away with the item, the gang drove it through a fence and a hedge.

The incident was not the first involving fork lift trucks to happen on the Castle Heights site. Four forklift trucks and a 360 degree mini digger were taken from location last year alone.

Meanwhile, commenting on this particular case, Mr Fraser said: "The thieves must have waited for us to leave. They knew what they were coming for."

He added: "I would have thought they had a low loader truck to take it away. They couldn't have escaped on it because it would only move about 15 miles per hour.
They wouldn't have just driven away on it either, because it had an immobiliser, so somebody's actually used a key to start it."

These days criminals intent on taking vehicles of this nature have to be better equipped than ever before because of the range of security features the machines possess.
