Why is Theatre Getting More Popular?

Despite the fact that we have just come out of a recession and are now heading towards a time of great austerity as almost all areas face huge spending cuts, the popularity of theatre seems to be going from strength to strength. When the economy was at its very worst during the recession, the West End actually saw its highest earnings in over 25 years. So why is it that theatre is bucking the general trend of frugality and becoming ever more popular?

There are many reasons for this. Firstly, during times of recession, people are likely to spend extra on more mid-priced entertainment pursuits. Excessive holidays will be reduced and instead people will ‘treat’ themselves to more opulent nights out instead of the more costly weeks away.

Not only this, but the internet has also very much helped to change the focus of who theatre is actually aimed towards. With numerous sites offering cheap London theatre tickets, not only is it cheaper for fans of theatre to head to a show whenever they wish, but theatre has also simply become more accessible to those who might once have not been able to afford it.

Besides cheap theatre tickets, there is also far more choice for people wishing to see theatre, with a far more diverse range of both populist and more specialist shows being seen in many different theatres in London. TV and film stars are also now more likely to cross over into both mainstream and experimental theatre and, as a result – alongside the cheap theatre tickets available – those schooled on TV and film as opposed to theatre are also starting to become far more interested in the medium.

So whilst the cheap London theatre tickets may help, the fact that theatre itself is making itself more accessible and the fact that austere times make us feel that we deserve such a treat is all conspiring to ensure that theatre just goes from strength to strength.
