Focus on what brings us together as Christians

With all of the differences in religions and religious views in the world there is also a lot of commonality. While there are various Christian denominations with different views on baptism, communion and worship , there are more things these denominations have in common than they do not have in common. We tend to focus on the differences rather than our common beliefs. I believe this is our own humanity that tries to divide rather than bring the Body of Christ together. We tend to focus on differences not only in varying religions but in everything we encounter. We looks at people and immediately, rather than focus on the things we have in common, we focus on the things that are different. We look at neighbors and instead of focus on the common values we have such as love for our family or local sports team affiliation, we look at how they drive a different model car than I drive or they choose different places to vacation. This is not the work of Christ and only divides the Body of Christ which all Christians are part of.

The Body of Christ is however brought together by one thing all the denominations have in common, which is communion. Every Christian denomination participates in the remembrance of Jesus during the final hours of his life when he broke bread and shared wine with the Apostles. Various denominations may participate on communion at different frequencies or in different manners, but every denomination recognizes the importance and value of celebrating communion as the Body of Christ. Each church may purchase their church supplies or communion supplies from different places but that is not the point. The main point here is that there is a something we have in common and that we need to focus on what brings us together rather than what sets us apart.

Distributing communion can be done in many different ways by many different methods. Communion can be celebrated during your Sunday church service or it can be done in the home in the event someone cannot make it to church due to illness or other obstacles. Communion is often brought to the elderly or infirm so that they can feel closer to the rest of the Body of Christ in spirit even if they cannot be there physically in person. My hope is that we can use the commonality of communion to bring us together to bring the Body of Christ closer together.
