Expat Health Care To Trust

Whether you’re new to living abroad or not, getting the right health care sorted before you leave is imperative. Expatriate medical insurance can be a bedrock of security for anyone working away from family or loved ones. Or, if you are moving with your family, health insurance for the family is something you would never leave home without.

Anyone who is working outside of the country of their nationality under the age of 61 can apply. The international healthcare plan can cover you, your partner and any dependant children under the age of 18, or the age of 23 if they are studying full time at university.

If you are applying for expatriate medical insurance many companies don’t ask you to take a medical or have to complete a questionnaire. However, some employ a 2 year moratorium which states that any medical problem that has arisen 2 years before initiating cover is not claimable until 2 years afterwards.

If you have claimed for illnesses before this really shouldn’t affect your ability to claim in the future. However, those with no claims can be entitled to a bonus or a discount. Ideally the international healthcare plan should allow you to visit any hospital of your choice so long as you have authorisation and have already contacted your insurance provider.

For many plans you might be covered for the entirety of the treatment, whether it be out patient treatment or therapy. However, depending on the type of plan you have agreed, you might have an upper limit on certain treatments like surgery. It is worth being absolutely certain of all of this before you travel.

Of course, any insurance company you decide to use should be a regulated and accredited organisation. Typically, they should be regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
