How different kinds of links affect SEO

The right sort of link makes a huge difference to the search engine optimization of a website, while other links may have no effect or even prove detrimental. Search engines analyse links closely in order to determine whether they are from authoritative or spam sites, and patterns of linking between multiple sites are also recorded. The aim of the search engines is to prevent people manipulating search rankings by devious means, such as exchanging links with other sites, or even buying and selling them. This would go against maintaining levels of quality on the Web, as sites with poor content would be able to leapfrog to the top of the search results.

The best kinds of links for SEO are those which come from what are termed authoritative websites, the ones which the search engines have already noted as being of good quality and respected in their fields. It is not enough simply to obtain a link from such a site, because search engines will analyse whether one's own website shares similar subject matter. If not, this might indicate the link was acquired for reasons other than sharing valuable content.

Search engines are able to detect when links first appear on a site and when they are removed. This enables them to spot suspicious events, such as a large number of links to one site appearing very suddenly, although it is possible that this can happen legitimately when a subject hits the news.

It is normal for what are called 'link neighbourhoods' to arise on the Web, where a group of sites all sharing a similar theme end up linking to one another, and this is understood by search engines. A website which has links to all the authoritative sites in its particular sphere of interest is known as a 'hub', while an especially renowned website which has attracted links from all the other sites within its subject area is called an 'authority'. These are typical patterns of linking behaviour that will not raise alarm signals on the part of the search engines, and the links thus formed have a positive effect on search rankings. This is because acquiring a link from a site which is, in turn, linked to by other authoritative sites is seen as more valuable in terms of search engine optimization, and the effect accumulates as more quality sites become linked to one another.

The text of a link is important, and it should contain keywords which are relevant to the site the link is from. Search engines also look at any content surrounding a link to ensure that there is some similarity of subject matter. They examine the text of other links nearby and the content of the page as a whole. All these factors help to determine whether a link is genuine, forming part of an overall theme, or merely a poor attempt to influence a site's search ratings.
