The Lion King

‘The Lion King’ was a huge hit film in 1994 when it was first released. In fact, many saw it as the film that represented Disney’s renaissance. It was seen as a film that set new standards for animated films. The vocal talents of such huge stars as James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons and Rowan Atkinson helped as did the musical numbers written by Elton John. Add that to a great story and it is perhaps no surprise that ‘The Lion King’ was such a smash.

Disney naturally wanted to make the most of their success. The influence of this film can certainly be seen in many of their later animated releases. However, it also led to them deciding to increase their involvement in musical theatre and the stage adaptation of ‘The Lion King’ was born.

However, it is not enough to try to replicate a film experience inside a theatre with live actors although some would say that is exactly what has been done with ‘Dirty Dancing’ and that is a huge hit show. ‘The Lion King’, however used some really exciting puppetry to bring the stage version alive and this has contributed to the show being one of the hottest tickets around the world including the production currently running in London’s West End.

The producers have also pushed certain other boundaries, being the first show of such profile to perform on Sundays. This has been a huge success and has led to other producers, including the National Theatre, following suit. The great thing about Sunday performances is that when people are only able to visit London for a weekend, they are able to make the most of their short visit.
