Insulating Garage Doors

Freezing winters with cold winds and humid summers with high level of heat and moisture can be a threat to your garage doors durability and functioning. So, what you can do is insulate the garage door to protect it from the negativities of any climate. Insulating your door doesn’t really mean that you are going to enjoy cozy winters or chilly summers inside the garage; it just means that the garage would have a temperature that is bearable. In case, you have an attached garage with your home, the temperature of the garage would really matter as it would change the temperature of your home as well. So, insulating the garage means you are indirectly lowering the burden of your energy bills as your cooling costs or heating costs would reduce.
Now the main thing is how to insulate your garage door. Firstly, you are to measure the door panels in terms of height. Now you are to get a 1 inch poly insulation which is to be cut into strips that are around 2 inches wide but they are supposed to be an inch less in height than the actual door panels. Next you are to fetch some industrial glue- industrial because that's sticky enough. This adhesive is for sticking the poly insulation strips on the panels of the garage door. The pattern should be the same for all door panels. One strip is to be placed at each end of the panel while almost two strips are to be adjusted and stuck in the middle area of each panel of the door. The poly insulation is only for the purpose of preventing your insulation layer from coming into contact with the garage door. so basically it’s a kind of shield.
The next step is to cut your half inch reflective insulation into panel shapes. For those who are not aware of reflective insulation; it is foil backed poly insulation which is about half inch thick. So, this reflective insulation is to be exactly the same size as the individual garage door panels. Cut them in a manner that no space is left on the panel and the insulating layer covers all areas of the panels.
You can glue your reflective insulation onto the poly insulation layer you glued before or you could fit the reflective insulation panels in the frame of your garage door. It depends on the style and design of your garage door which would decide which option to go for. The reflective side of the layer is supposed to be on the inner side, which is, facing the garage door not you or the garage.
Now, you might be wondering that if all the work had to be done by the reflective insulation layer, why didn’t we paste this on the door in the first place. Basically, the insulation layer works along with the air space that our first layer of poly insulation created. Both working together, keep the temperature of the garage livable.
