Tungsten Carbide – Reason for Its Popularity in Many Application Areas

Tungsten carbide is a special chemical compound that is derived by combining two elements tungsten and carbon atoms together. The unique combination of these two results in a product that is extremely hard with high electrical resistivity. This is the main reason why this chemical compound is used in a variety of important applications. Let’s check where these compound and its product derivatives are used.

In Military Sector

This segment uses Tungsten carbide to make armor piercing ammunitions. They are efficient replacement of depleted uranium, which are mostly unavailable or unacceptable for use. Known for great hardness and very high density, they are in fact great materials used in weapons of warfare from those of small-caliber arms to the ones reserved for artillery use. Another place where this chemical compound is used is to get effective neutron reflector that are great during early investigations into nuclear chain reactions, mainly for weapons.

Sports Equipment

Tungsten carbide is also used extensively in making various sports equipment that requires durable materials. These are mostly used at the tip of the trekking poles and skiing poles, to facilitate hikers and skiers with a reliable solution to gain traction on hard surfaces. Moreover, it helps in reducing pressure of the leg joints to make trekking/hiking a great experience. Again many sports bikes use them on their tires for better grip on hard icy surfaces, as it enhances steering without itself getting worn out. Additionally, you would also find their use in the shoeing of horses as it can improve traction on slippery surfaces such as roads or ice.

For Domestic Use

Also known as cemented carbide, tungsten carbide is used extensively in making jewelry today. They are specially used in men’s platinum wedding rings as inlays because they are much more scratch resistant then other materials like metals, wood etc. Again there are carbide balls, which are used in the tip of ball point pens, for long lasting effect while writing.

Machine Tools

Look around you and you would find wide range of machine tools that are made from this compound. They are usually used in places where there are chances of other metal tools wearing out with high production runs. Additionally, the tungsten carbide machining tools are resistant to other factor like high temperature and offer faster machining. With the right blend of these elements, you can also get machining tools like wear parts that can withstand high thrust loads, resist corrosion and abrasion, and to stand up to wear and heavy shock.

Whatever carbide products like carbide bearings, balls, and blanks you buy; it is important that you get them from authentic manufacturers for genuine quality goods.
