Cleaning your carpet – doing more harm than good

Commercial Cleaning Machines

Hiring a machine from the drycleaners or DIY hire stores can be useful; however these machines are not powerful enough to remove all the dirt and stains whilst the over the counter detergents will often be too mild to make the difference that a professional can do.

When too much detergent is put onto a carpet without being rinsed out properly you get the effect of the dirt attracting to the fibers like a magnet. This is because the detergents have a residue which, when dry, becomes tacky. When you then walk on the carpet any dirt or dust gets trodden in; creating soiling. Your carpets will be just as bad and sometimes even worse within a few weeks.

Domestic Cleaning Machines

A vax is a home domestic machine you can buy from any major high street retailer. This is a common and very cheap method of cleaning but there is very little power in these machines so you will be putting down a lot of chemical and not extracting much back into the tank. I would recommend them if your washing machine floods to suck up the excess water but unfortunately they are not up to the job of cleaning your carpets.

Choose a Professional Cleaner

Hot water extraction, or steam cleaning as it is commonly known, by a professional is the best way to get your carpets cleaned. A professional operator will come to your home with a big industrial machine that is filled up with hot water and a mild biodegradable solution (stains and soiling are maybe treated beforehand if necessary.) The machine is then switched on and a long hose attached to the machine runs through your house to the cleaning wand. The cleaning solution is heated through an internal heat exchanger and is pumped through the hose to the wand at a very high temperature, deep into the fibres of the carpet. The powerful vacuums then immediately extract this solution through a separate suction hose and into a recovery tank. The recovery tank is then emptied in an outside drain. There is very little residue left behind with this process so carpets do not get dirty quickly after cleaning.

For commercial cleaning I would recommend an extra rinse process once the cleaning is completed with an acidic solution. Commercial carpets get a lot of heavy use so a stronger cleaning solution is needed to remove very heavy soiling The rinse process is then done after adding the acidic solution so the carpets are completely residue free.

Choose a Carpet Cleaner that will do the job properly!

How do you find a good carpet cleaner?

Make sure you select a professional company who have references, are fully insured and who have experienced operators. A very good website to check references is www.checkatrade.co.uk

This company carefully vets member companies and supply monitoring cards tp give to their clients on completion of the work. They then put these reviews on their website and will check up on these reviews to ensure that they are genuine.
