How to refill an ink cartridge.

Printer cartridges are a highly demanded product which is no surprise when the world has become increasingly computer reliant. With word processed documents being the norm and home photo printers becoming more popular, to name just two common uses, the usefulness of ink cartridges cannot be denied. However, although they serve a necessary function, the number being thrown away is extortionate when adopting an environmental point of view. The cost of throwing away empty printer cartridges is high. Around three hundred million are discarded a year and these end up in land fill sites. Unfortunately the plastic they are made from is non-biodegradable so contribute greatly to environmental problems as a result of this. This is why it is important to reuse ink cartridges through the refilling process.

Printer cartridge refilling kits are widely available. To begin, a syringe needs ti be filled with one of the printer ink colours. To prevent any stains this should be undertaken over a sink or scrap material. The amount of ink an ink cartridge can hold varies from printer to printer but is usually stated in the instructions. In the top of the container make a small hole for each colour chamber and then insert the needle of the syringe. When filling the cartridge avoiding any air getting into the chamber is important as this causes it to foam. To prevent this, the ink must be transferred very slowly. It is not necessary to seal the holes made with the needle as there will already be existing holes for the ink to ‘breathe’. Carefully clean or dispose of the syringe needle and place the ink cartridges back in the printer. To check the printer ink has been successfully refilled, run the cleaning cycle a few times to check for gaps.
