Electric Garage Heaters – How to Stop the Winter Cold

It's 5:00 am and you are getting ready to go to work. It's dark outside and you are dressed and ready. You walk out of the house and to your garage. It's twenty below zero and even though you have your winter clothes on, you are chilled as soon as you open the door and step out. You can see your breath in the air. You move quickly to the garage to try and beat the cold. You open the garage door and step inside, quickly closing the door behind you to try and keep the bitter cold out. You turn on the light and you can still see your breath in the freezing air. You realize that it's as cold in your garage as it is outside, perhaps colder. You reach for your keys and get the car door open and get in. You turn the key hoping the car will start. It starts and you are relieved. You don't dare turn on the heater yet because you know it will just pour freezing air on you until the car engine warms up and that could take a few minutes. You sit in the car in your big parka, gloves, scarf, wool hat, boots and wool socks, shivering and freezing as you wait for the car to warm up. It seems to take an eternity, but finally the engine warms up to normal running temperature and you are able to turn on the car heater. You turn it up to full blast as soon as you can. The car begins to warm up slowly. You are still freezing but not quite as much as before. You now begin thinking about opening the garage door and driving the car out into the freezing night air.
There is a better way. Picture this. Your electric garage heater automatically starts heating the garage at 4:30 am. It's on a timer that automatically starts the heater half an hour before you arrive and turns it off five minutes after you leave. This time, when you step into the garage, it's nice and toasty. You might take off your gloves as you get into the car. The car starts right up because it is also warmer. A minute later the car heater is on and the cabin is warm. Now you open the garage door and drive out, feeling warm and happy.
If you don't already own, get a garage heater. Here are some things go look for. Electric garage heaters are better than propane or anything else. They are less expense to run and are safer. They are cheaper because 100% of the electricity is converted to heat. Propane converts about 80%. They are safer because you don't need to worry about vapors or gasses that are not safe to inhale and could be explosive. Install your heater in the roof or ceiling if you can. If not, your next best option is a wall mount. Put the heater in the coldest part of the garage, it just works better that way. Be sure to try out your heater before you purchase it. The reason for this is not so much to see how much heat it puts out, instead, it's to listen to it. You need to listen to any garage heater you considering to see how loud it is. Some are really loud and may not be suitable for you.
Most garage heaters are built to provide enough heat for a one car garage. They are rated for between 500 and 700 square feet. Measure your garage and make sure you get enough heater or heaters to fill up your garage with heat. Be sure to a heater that has an automatic overheating cut off feature. That will cover you on the safety front.
Popular brands to look at are Dayton, Ouellet, Qmark, Chromalox, Reznor, Lasko and Farenheat. Good stores to get your electric garage heater include Home Depot, Lowes, eBay, Northern Tool and Grainger. There is no need to freeze every morning, get yourself a garage heater already. You'll be glad you did.
