Weight loss for cats

For kittens, weight loss is almost never the problem. A moderate amount of fat is a good sign, and growing cats need to eat plenty of calories to be healthy. Cat nutrition for animals less than a year old is easiest with a specially balanced kitten food like the ones produces by Hill's Pet. This will ensure they get everything they need.

On the other hand, adult cats can easily get too fat. Obesity contributes to many serious feline health problems, such as diabetes and hepatic lipidosis. As fat cats get older they are more likely to suffer from arthritis and other painful, degenerative joint conditions. They don't live as long as cats with a healthy weight and often have a reduced quality of life too.

Cat nutrition should be controlled. If a cat is starting to grow fat, both portion sizes and the number of meals per day can be reduced. It may also be necessary to make a change from a high-fat cat food to a healthier one, or a food plan intended especially to promote weight loss.

Pet diet is only half the problem. The other half is all about exercise, and this can be particularly difficult with cats. It's easy to put a dog on a leash and take them for a walk in the local park or a jog through city streets, but cats are far less inclined to follow their owners at the best of times, and very few enjoy being taken for a walk.

Cats that live in homes with gardens are more inclined to get exercise, and in many cases fat cats can be encouraged towards increased activity by making sure they spend more time in the garden. However, those cats that live in apartment blocks without green spaces will rarely get outdoors. Increased activity can be encouraged through play and toys, but proper pet diet is absolutely essential for all indoor cats.
