Benefits of Plastic Lumber used for Plastic Decking

Plastic decking is a form of deck construction that mainly utilizes a product called plastic lumber. Plastic lumber is composed of reused plastic materials. Besides decking, plastic lumber can be used for various applications, especially landscaping, such as guardrails, sign supports, fences, edges, borders, retaining walls, posts, park benches, walkways, gazebo construction, raised beds, and boardwalks. Plastic lumber, as used in decking construction, provides you with a lot of advantages. So, what are its benefits for plastic decking?

First, plastic lumber enables you to reduce the maintenance costs and prevents you from replacing the materials of plastic decking over and over again. It is because plastic lumber is more durable than the natural wood. With plastic lumber, your decking maintenance is lesser compared to the wood decking, because wood has a high potential of cracking, splitting, warping, and creating molds, as time passes. You have to regularly apply sealants to your wood deck to prevent these things from happening, which would really be costly on your part, unlike plastic decking, which does not require periodical application of sealants or other maintenance applications. Plastic lumber also provides your deck with waterproof, which means that you no longer need to apply water-resisting sealants to your plastic decking. It is also graffiti-resistant.

Second, plastic lumber is environmentally friendly. By using plastic lumber, you also help in reducing the litter rate, since its materials are made from recycled or reused plastics. This also means that by using plastic lumber for your deck, you also promote the preservation of the environment. Because plastic lumber is mainly composed of recycled materials, it also helps in lessening the space of dumpsites - it also helps in preventing the incineration of plastics, which is really harmful for the environment. If plastic lumber is used as an alternative for the traditional wood, then a large percentage of the forest is saved in the process.

Third, plastic lumber helps in reducing the demand of wood supply and preventing deforestation. This is highly beneficial for the preservation of wildlife habitat, stability of the ecosystem, and the preservation of diverse species. Although there are forests that have planted trees, these trees often require chemical fertilizers for them to grow easily, which can be harmful to the environment and may be of lesser quality than the naturally grown trees.

Fourth, plastic lumber does not use chemical preservatives that are usually applied to the wood to be more durable. The chemical preservatives can be potentially harmful, which are applied in these treated-lumbers used inside and outside your house; therefore, these chemicals are constantly exposed to you and your family, and may cause some bad effects to your health, such as skin rash, respiratory infection, among others. However, plastic lumber can be a good alternative of treated-wood, because just like the treated-wood, plastic lumber is also insect-resistant, moisture-resistant, and does not rot easily.

With these benefits, plastic lumber is a good material to use for plastic decking.
