Touchscreen Evolution and Revolution
|
You know you’re getting middle-aged when the technology that becomes available in reality is more advanced than the technology that appeared in the science fiction television programmes you watched as a child. Many of us felt this sense of fascination and bewilderment with the emergence of the touchscreen pc. It was as if the technology of Star Trek had been beamed into our ordinary world; suddenly cameras, iPhones, and supermarket checkouts all seemed to adopt touchscreen technology as if it had come out of nowhere. But it should be acknowledged that the concept of the touchscreen pc has undergone a long process of development that dates back to the 1960s.
The origin of the idea of a computer that would respond directly to the operator’s touch without a keyboard, mouse or stylus was seen as a practical reality that could be developed long before the writers of science fiction had created it as a fantasy. In the 1970s primitive versions of touch screens began to appear at electronic points of sale in the retail trade. Admittedly, such units were clumsy and prone to failure by today’s standards; but these early versions of what we now see as features of our everyday lives paved the way for rapid development. The next introduction of touch screens that the general public became aware of was in the field of computer gaming. In the 1980s game companies experimented with the possibilities offered, but again the complexity of the electronics required prevented the effectual application of such technology in anything as small as a game console, and it was only in larger units such as pub quiz machines that the idea saw practical application.
Nevertheless, these primitive applications of touchscreen technology facilitated the rapid and expediential advancement in our understanding, so that now the touchscreen pc is not only a plausible and workable reality, but a ubiquitous feature of our lives.
