Always Be A Step Ahead Against Mobile Phone Theft
|
Mobile Phones are one of the favorite objects of theft across the globe. It is easy to see why this important gadget of communication and entertainment is often preferred by thieves. There is a surge in mobile phone theft on brand new smart phones. Newly released mobile phone units are more highly priced by thieves than older models because of the former’s higher resale value.
According to Continental Research, about 1.3 million mobile phone users in the United Kingdom were victims of mobile theft in 2001. Alarming statistics released by the Home Office had revealed that most of the victims are minors below 18 years old, which accounts for almost half of the total cases. Another disturbing fact is that majority of the offenders are also teenagers aging at least 16 years old. Furthermore, this kind of crime against personal property is so rampant that according to estimates, one mobile phone is stolen every 3 minutes daily. According to the latest data published in 2010, about 350,000 cases were documented in the United Kingdom. A remarkable improvement but still alarming enough.
According to a research conducted Symantec in 2010, more than 50% of adults had been victims of mobile phone theft in India, while in the United States, almost 40% of mobile phone users had reported to have lost their cell phones to theft. The city of Miami, in the state of Florida, had accounted 52% of cell phone loss or theft, the highest in the United States. In the Philippines, an average of 10 mobile phones is reported stolen every day, according to a survey conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission. However, actual cases may be higher as most victims do not report their cases to the police because of the futility on having it recovered. One estimate suggests that about 400 theft cases occur daily across the country.
Any prudent mobile phone user should back up all important information such private correspondence, personal files on a separate external storage device. Phone contacts and important notes must be written meticulously in a small pocket notebook. Avoid leaving your cell phone inside the car or even at home. Keep your mobile phone with you at all times and avoid crowded places and crime prone areas. Leave and securely keep more expensive mobile phones at home, if they are not needed, and only bring older models. If someone points a knife or gun at you, simply give the old one.
These figures are shocking. The need for an insurance against mobile phone theft requires no further explanation. For an affordable premium, there are comprehensive insurance policies that include theft protection.
