Contents Insurance – Is Your Policy Flexible?

The threat of flooding is one that never seems to go away in some parts of the country, but what does this mean for your buildings insurance?

If you live in a high-risk flood area which has been affected previously, your buildings insurance premiums will have gone up as a result.

What are some of the things you can do to minimise the impact of flooding in your home? Some of these can be done at any time, while others should be done when a flood warning is issued.

Make sure you’re well informed

A big part of preparing for a flood is to actually know it’s coming. This isn’t always possible but in many cases, there will be flood warning issued in advance to give you time to prepare.

Knowing what’s around the corner and being able to do something about it can help reduce the amount you have to claim on your buildings insurance.

Make some alterations to your home

Flood guards for your windows and doors are just two products you can buy and fit to help reduce the impact of flooding. If you have no flood defences in place at all, your home could really take a battering and if you have no buildings insurance, it could also cripple you financially.

There are some home contents that just can’t be replaced so if you live in an area that floods often, make sure these items are stored somewhere safe, dry and as high up in your property as possible. The same goes for any high worth items you have such as jewellery.

Turn everything off

If you’re aware of a flood warning you should switch off your central heating, mains water, gas and electricity supplies as well as all electrical items.

Having a house full of water and a live electricity supply is a recipe for disaster and not something you want to happen.

Making sure you have your mobile phone to hand with the number of your buildings insurance company is also a good idea as your landline is unlikely to work.

Clear your gutters regularly

If your gutters are blocked then the water obviously can’t drain away properly once it’s fallen. You should also check the drains around your home to make sure they’re not blocked too.

It’s a good idea to keep these things unblocked as a matter of course anyway, regardless of whether you’re in a flood risk area or not.

If your property is in a high flood risk postcode, your buildings insurance quotes will reflect this. However, if you follow the advice above, you can help minimise the damage to your home and get things back to normal quicker.
