Protecting Your Flooring

Protecting your flooring is always going to be important. However, some are far easier to protect than others. For instance, carpets may be a cheaper option in the outset, but they are likely to be far harder to keep in good condition and will often need replacing on a much more regular basis than a solution such as oak flooring.

However, just because they are harder to protect, this doesn’t mean they can’t be. Firstly, ensure that you don’t just assume vacuuming will be all that is needed to keep them in good condition. Instead, make sure you use carpet cleaner to remove build ups of dirt and chemicals that could otherwise wear away the carpet over time or leave it impossible to get looking good again. Also try to avoid wearing shoes inside if your floors are all carpeted – the more you drag footwear over them, the quicker they are likely to show signs of wear.

When it comes to hardwood oak flooring, there is a lot more that can be done to keep the floor looking its best and in turn oak flooring is likely to last far longer. Treating the floor to protect it from UV rays is a good start as, otherwise, regular exposure to sunlight can cause areas to fade.

Next, ensure that you place felt pads on the bottom of any furniture to avoid items scratching the floor should they move. Regular sweepings are also a good idea, using soft brooms – this will remove any hard objects that could end up being pressed into the flooring.

Finally, avoid wearing high heels on hardwood oak flooring. Whilst such flooring is extremely strong, constant pressure by such items can eventually lead to small dents forming.

Whichever type of flooring you have, very simple measures are all that will be needed to ensure it stays looking its best for as long as possible.
