Backpacking Basics - What Beginners Need to Know

If you're a novice at backpacking who has limited or no experience at all, you should at least know a couple of essential things before you go out to the wilderness. To get the best out of your hiking experience a bit of knowledge will help you out a lot in planning out, being safe, and having an enjoyable time on your first trip.

As with other activities, you must first know the basics of backpacking. You should find as many books and magazines you can read that's connected to the subject and read them. You can also join an online forum where you can interact with other backpackers and get some tips and guides on how you should plan your trip. You should also know those things that you should not do, the common mistakes that most beginner backpackers fall into. The most important thing you need to learn is how to stay safe.

First of all, you'll need to have the right gear for your trip. When you go backpacking, you're not only hiking, of course you'll be camping out too. That is why you need to have a good tent and/or sleeping bag that are small enough to conveniently fit in your backpack.

Learning how to properly put your gear in your backpack is a skill that beginners should definitely learn. As a beginner the first thought that comes into mind is to pack everything that you THINK you may need. Though the idea sounds nice, it is not really practical as too much gear will add to the weight of your backpack. When you go hiking you'll definitely feel all that extra weight, as it will definitely slow you down. Just bring the absolute essentials on your trip, and it will help if you can think of multiple uses for a single item so that you can lessen the amount of stuff you have to lug around.

Another skill all novice backpackers need to know is how to do simple repairs just in case something gets broken during the trip. You should have a small sewing kit or at least a roll of duct tape handy when camping out, as these can really help whenever something gets broken on your pack or any of your gear. The repairs need not be pretty; they just need to be functional.

Aside from learning how to repair your gear you should also know basic first aid. There's no knowing what will happen to you, or your companions when you're out in the wild. So just in case anything bad will happen you should not forget to pack a first aid kit along with your gear, it's better to be safe than sorry.

For more tips regarding backpacking you should participate in online forums and take note of what experienced backpackers have to say. Keep in mind that a well thought of trip will encounter less trouble and hence be more enjoyable. So plan your trip wisely so you can enjoy the beauty of the natural world.
