Home Insurance – Tips for Making Your Home More Secure

One way to get cheaper home insurance quotes is to make your home more secure.

Lower home insurance premiums is not the only good reason to improve security though, it will also give you peace of mind.

Below are five tips on improving the security in and around your home.

Join a neighbourhood watch scheme

Being a member of your local neighbourhood watch scheme can result in paying less for your home insurance. It demonstrates to your insurance company that you live in a security conscious area where people are proactive in looking out for each other’s property.

Fit a burglar alarm

The very sight of a burglar alarm on the outside of your home is enough to put off most burglars. Burglar alarms don’t need to be expensive and will help bring down your annual home insurance premiums.

When you’re sourcing home insurance quotes, you will be asked whether or not your home has an alarm fitted.

If you do have a burglar alarm in your home, make sure you set it every time you leave your house. If you don’t and you get burgled when it isn’t on, this could cause you problems when making a claim with your home insurance company.

Lock away any garden equipment out of sight
When you’re looking for cheap home insurance quotes, remember to include any gardening tools and equipment you have.

Most people store things like lawnmowers and other gardening implements in their shed. Make sure your shed is secured with decent quality padlocks and that any windows are covered so nobody can see inside.

Install security lighting
Security lighting can also make your home feel more secure. You may also be asked about this when applying for home insurance. Generally speaking, any form of light is a visible deterrent to a burglar because it signifies someone may be in the house.

If your back garden is secluded it’s wise to have security lighting put in there too. Security lighting is not expensive to have installed but could mean you can benefit from cheap home insurance and increased security for your family.

Use timer lights when you’re away on holiday
Even if you’ve told neighbours you’re going away on holiday, it certainly doesn’t do any harm to keep your home lit at times when it normally would be.

Timer plugs are cheap and easy to set up. Having these in your home may not make your home insurance any cheaper, but it will stop you worrying so much when you’re away for a break.

If you make some of these additions to your security, you should find that your home insurance quotes will be cheaper when it’s up for renewal.
