Online aptitude tests play important role in graduate recruitment

Graduate recruiters will be looking towards using online psychometric tests and online aptitude tests to sort through the thousands of applications they are receiving each year.

With the number of graduate applications increasing almost three fold in as many years, recruiters are having to rely on applicants completing an aptitude test to find the most suitable candidates for the advertised position.

According to an article in The Daily Mail, graduate recruiters are bracing themselves for even more applications from recent graduates. In fact, leading UK recruitment firms have said that for every graduate vacancy, employers are receiving applications from up to 83 candidates. This number is almost treble the number of applicants that were applying for jobs three years ago.

With so much competition for jobs and with so many graduates competing against each other, a lot of UK graduate recruiters have shifted to a different practice by employing online aptitude tests and other means of screening application forms from thousands of candidates.

Psychometric testing is also being used by more recruiters as a means of matching the personality and main character traits of the candidate with the requirements of the vacancy and company policies. More companies are also using telephone tests and interviews to screen through the lists of candidates before inviting them in for a face-to-face interview.

Although new graduates will find it difficult in a job market that is already suffering due to the economic recession and skills shortages, some employers are still keen to point out there are still opportunities available for the candidates who do not give up and keep looking for the right role.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Stephen Isherwood from Ernst &Young said despite the number of graduate applicants being up by 30 per cent, there are still roles available for the very best candidates.
He said: “It’s clearly a very competitive jobs market, but for candidates who are prepared to be flexible there are still vacancies available.”
