People are just suckers for anything portable. In this age of portable electronic gadgets such as computer notebooks, handheld gaming consoles, mobile phones and MP3 players, it seems that anything good nowadays almost always fits in one's pocket. Enter the mother of all portable gadgets, the precursor of the all-in-one's and do-it-all's - the ubiquitous folding chair. It is the oldest surviving remnant of the ancient portable lifestyle that we triumphantly glorify up to this day. Folding chairs are as old as human civilization itself having served royalties as well as commoners during the time of the great Egyptian civilization. Any modern household is not complete without one and people have their fair share of folding chair experiences at home and outdoors. So what characteristics constitute good folding chairs?
Sturdiness comes to mind right away. As much as you wanted to forgive those poorly made folding chairs you happen to unfortunately sat upon rather unceremoniously and forget the subsequent embarrassment of falling down flat on your back because the folding chair just wont hold up to your weight, you simply can't. There are various types of folding chairs according to design they are namely:
Pivot under seat level
As the name suggests, the pivot point that serves as the anchor in folding the chair is located below the seat level. This folding chair design has two sub-types, the front x design and the side x design. Front x chairs is usually made a little bit wider for better stability and subsequently, side x chairs should be made a little bit narrower. An example of this is the director's chair.
Pivot over seat level
These are the most stable among the folding chair design types because the pivot point is located above the seat level. The only thing going against this type of chair is that the seat is often too close to the ground so getting up is quite a chore for some. An example of this is the beach lounge chair.
Pivot on seat level
The pivot point for this folding chair type is right exactly on the seat level. This is quite a stable chair but because the seat itself serves the pivoting part, a sudden shift of weight inward especially by children may inadvertently cause it to fold while the person is still sitting.
The raw material used for folding chair construction is an equally important factor in determining the quality of the chair. No matter how good the design for a particular folding chair is, it simply would not hold up or would not last long if the quality raw material is substandard. They would only serve as vehicles of accidents waiting to happen. The ideal raw materials for folding chairs should be strong yet light weight and should be resistant to exposure to the elements especially when often used outdoors. Good materials include pre-treated wood and metals like stainless steel and aluminum layered with protective coating. Heavy and strong fabrics are often used such a thick canvas and well as plastics. |
