What do to about obese pets find the right dog food and give them exercise.

Obesity in dogs and cats is on the rise, unfortunately. Just as human beings are becoming larger and even clinically obese in some cases, so are our pets. As well as regular exercise, feeding your animal the right kind of dog food or cat food is essential. Avoiding fatty foods is the best way, doctors agree, of for humans to lose weight and the same, naturally applies to animals. There are various varieties of dog food and cat food that are right for overweight animals and that can help them lose weight as part of properly thought out, professionally recommended diet and exercise regime.

As well as exercise it’s also important to make sure that you don’t feed your animals at meal times – a dog or cat hovering around the dinner table might be sweet and endearing but keep feeding it titbits and you could cause it to put on too much weight. It’s better to be cruel to be kind, the experts say, and allow your animals only to eat their own food at regular feeding times.

In fact, this issue is more serious than a lot of people realize. It’s not just about the welfare of a beloved pet but those who let dogs get over weight by feeding them too much dog food and not giving them enough exercise could leave themselves open to legal action. Pet owners who refuse to put their seriously animals on a diet could be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act and this could involves fines of up to £20,000 or even 12 months' in prison.

You can tell if your dog is overweight but feeling its ribs with your fingers. If you can’t feel them under the flesh and fur your dog might need to lose some weight.
