The origins of hip hop clothing.

Can you think of any other music that is so closely linked to fashion as hip hop music and urban clothing?
This is perhaps due to several reasons.

The origins of hip hop stem from the African-American culture as does the clothing. Many hip hop artists would wear distinctly African items of clothing which would then be imitated by fans. The same artists were passionate about their roots, a passion that would only grow stronger alongside the difficulties of being an African-American in a country that suffered from marked racism.

For this reason, urban clothes should not be treated lightly. It is symbolic and worn with pride or to make a statement. For example, the trend of wearing padlock chains by some rap artists was a way of expressing solidarity with other African-Americans who had been imprisoned. For a minority who are faced with the bare facts that they remain prejudiced against, sometimes wrongly imprisoned and often unfairly treated, a necklace must be and usually is, more than just a necklace.

Unfortunately, sometimes this symbolism has gone the wrong way.

Rappers wearing expensive jewellery led to a spate of thefts from wealthy rap artists, by fans wanting to imitate their idols but being utterly unable to purchase the same items.

It is out of concern for the fans who cannot afford items of great wealth, who may be led to gain them through illegal means that some hip hop artists with more awareness than others choose to shun the wearing of expensive jewellery.

Haute couture has flirted with urban clothing. Designers have sent their models down the catwalk kitted out with black playsuits and heavy jewellery and using hip hop artists in their adverts, but the relationship between high fashion and urban clothes was a short-lived on.

Urban clothing, it seems, was born on the streets and belongs to the streets.
