Express yourself.

From the very origins of the human species, along with the need to create bonds with others, entertain ourselves and express ourselves creatively there has been the need to express ourselves through our clothes and adornments.

Once upon a time we would have used feathers, seeds and plant-base paints to create markings, now we have a wealth of accessories and clothing to choose from.

Expression of selves through the clothes we wear is the reason why, justly or unjustly, many people choose to judge others based on their appearance.

While the maxim ‘you cannot judge a book by its cover’ has traditionally been held to be the truth, perhaps it is no longer valid. In an age where every person can choose their manner of dress, from a wide range of options, where each signifies belonging to a group in society and the behaviours and beliefs that come with it – perhaps it isn’t therefore unfair to then interpret that person on the way they choose to present themselves to the world?

Hip hop clothing has one of the strongest identities in fashion, whether it is worn by rap stars in the recording studies or on stage, or by teenagers on the street wearing urban clothes.

Unlike the clothing of other celebrities, where it may be simply impossible to wear the same item because it is designer and therefore out of the price range of most people, hip hop clothing is more accessible. This makes urban clothes, unlike many other ‘looks’, one that is more about equality and therefore more powerful.

It isn’t ludicrous to say that a pair of jeans can be a uniform that marks an individual out as being part of a sector of society. Weren’t twinsets and pearls a marker of a lady in a certain sector of society?

Of course it isn’t enough just to be wearing jeans – brand is everything and in this at least Shakespeare was wrong: a name isn’t just a name.
