The Lion King. The Lion King recently celebrated ten years in Londons

The Lion King recently celebrated ten years in London’s West End. In fact, this musical’s success has played a large part in some record breaking box office receipts in the last few years. It is not surprising that Lion King tickets are some of the hardest to come by.

The musical is based on Disney’s animated film. The show opens with Rafiki celebrating the birth of Simba the lion cub with the song ‘Circle of Life’. It then leads its audience through an adventure encompassing the Pridelands, the Elephant’s Graveyard, the jungle and back, at last, to where it all began, Pride Rock.
Shaun Escoffery plays Mufasa, Simba’s father. He has appeared in many West End shows including ‘Smokey Joe’s Cafe’, ‘Tommy’ and ‘Les Miserables’. He was also in the superb musical drama ‘Parade’ at the Donmar Warehouse.

George Asprey plays Scar, Mufasa’s evil brother. His television work includes ‘Psychoville’, ‘A Life in Pictures’ and ‘Holby City’. His films include Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘The Greatest Game Ever Played’. Previous stage musicals include ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Dick Barton’ and ‘Chicago’.

Stephen Matthews plays Zazu. He has a wealth of theatre credits including ‘Lady in the Dark’ at the National Theatre. He has played Kenneth Williams in both ‘Cleo, Camping, Emanuelle and Dick’ and ‘Round the Horne Revisited’. Previous West End appearances include ‘Sherlock Holmes the Musical’, ‘Prisoner Cell Block H’ and ‘Oliver’.

The show is still regularly appearing in the nominations for major awards even though it already has so many. In London alone these include the Evening Standard Theatrical Event of the Year Award and the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement in Musical Theatre.
