Growing Lavender Essential Oil in the the Uk
|
It takes a lot of hard work to manage a successful farm, so much so that farming is considered one of the most difficult industry for workers. Farmers work hard with one specific goal in mind. If you are an arable farmer then you are working towards the harvest in the summer when all your hard work up to that point can rely on the weather. It's a very sad outcome to watch hard work turn out to be worthless because of something outside your control. Livestock farmers who sell their animals for meat work hard to keep their pigs, cows, and lambs healthy and fat so that they will get a high price. In the UK there are legions of young people avoiding this life of hard work for little pay and it is easy to see why.
For people who want to work in the countryside, however, alternative farming types are a good option. Lavender essential oil brings in a good price thanks to its high demand in the current market, so a lot of farmers are adding lavender to their regular cycle of crops. Lavender Essential Oil is the main by product and can command a high price if it is of good quality. The problems that plague traditional farmers also affect lavender farmers. You are putting in a lot of hard work during the year, working up to the summer harvest which may or may not be worth it. Earning an income as a farmer automatically comes with this risk.
If you have had a good crop of lavender during the year then your lavender essential oil can be made into all sorts of goodies including shampoo and soaps etc. There are countless other beauty products that you can fabricate. It can also be used on its own to help with things such as insomnia or head lice. There are hundreds of acres of lavender farming ground in the Provence area; most of this lavender is used commercially by beauty product manufacturers around the world. There are also huge lavender farms in Australia where lavender flourishes due to the hot, dry climate that is present in areas such as New South Wales and Tasmania.
Commercial lavender farming is not common in the UK. Lavender blooms, however, attract lots of tourists who want to come experience their beauty. Hence this is where these 'attractions' will make some money, selling products like the lavender essential oil direct to the paying public instead of marketing to the large beauty companies. If arable and livestock farming are not your ideal options, you have alternatives including lavender farming. There are other types such as viticulture which is farming of grapes, this is especially popular now in south west England where a much warmer climate, possibly due to global warming is now ensuring good harvests which would have otherwise only been available to the French. |
