Get connected

Many people don’t consider the technology that goes into the everyday products that we use. For most of us, it’s a case of turning the product on and then assuming that it will work ok. We often don’t consider the time, research and development that go into making the product, let alone making the workings behind the product.

At the heart of nearly all of today’s electronics is a printed circuit board or PCB as they are more commonly known. A PCB is essentially an electronic map. If you look at a PCB, you will see numerous copper tracks between components; in this analogy, these copper tracks are basically roads, a way of getting from one point to another. These copper tracks are vital as they map out how one component connects to another.

There are numerous components that actually go into a PCB, however, possibly the most important aspects of a PCB is the PCB design, PCB layout and how all the components are connected together. The best way to understand a PCB and what goes into the PCB design is to look at an example. Laptops are one product that are reliant on PCB’s, without them, they simply wouldn’t work. As with all electrical equipment, a laptop will not work without power. On a laptop, there will be an input socket for mains power, this will be connected to the motherboard of the laptop (which is a PCB), from here, the copper tracks distribute this power out to all the other components of the laptop which require electricity to operate. Without these copper tracks, power would not be able to get to the components and the laptop would not function.

Obviously PCB design is not a straightforward process, companies such as ours at Concept CAD are specialists in PCB design and PCB layout, anyone looking for PCB design should consult such a professional company when looking into a PCB project.
