How domain trust affects search engine optimisation

Search engine optimisation begins and ends with domain trust, i.e. getting the search engines to trust your site URLs enough to rank you highly. Using an SEO company will go a long way towards achieving this, as they know all the right levers to pull to achieve the best results, leaving you to concentrate on the business end of your site.

Your internet marketing plan should work on two levels, getting a high PageRank for your homepage, and achieving the same for deep linking pages, i.e. those which take people straight to your individual products. It’s essential you achieve a good level of domain trust before introducing new pages, because otherwise the chances of them ever ranking highly enough on searches to get noticed will be second to none.

The terms “domain trust” and “domain authority” are bandied about a lot by search engine optimisation services today. For most sites, building domain trust and authority is a continual process, as new pages are constantly being written and old ones taken down. This is why it’s best to place your site in the hands of a good SEO firm. So, what does domain trust mean to the search engines, and how do they evaluate it?

The reputation of a domain is improved by showing search engines like Yahoo and Google that the site is going to be of value to their directories, and doesn’t use unethical or illegal practices. There are a number of factors involved including link building strategies, site content, the site’s registration details and how many other domains it has links to. Here are a few of these in detail.

The first thing that search engines look at when deciding a site’s domain authority is where the links are from. In other words, are your external links from trustworthy sources, or those known to be scam or spam sites? If your links come from blacklisted sites, it follows you must be a scammer too. Unfortunately, picking up scam links is almost inevitable these days, there have even been suggestions that unethical site owners post dodgy links to their competitors’ sites to get them ousted from the directories. To avoid this, internet marketing firms advise building early, strong links from trusted social media sites like Wikipedia, Dmoz etc. If your site is later a victim of spamming, the result won’t be nearly so disastrous.

The registry details of your domain are another important area of SEO. There is still some contention over the fact that Google became a domain registrar, but it was done for a reason, and that was to protect the integrity of both themselves and the ethical site owners under their control. A domain register not only shows Google how many domains each site owner controls, but what links exist between independent domains. For example, if multiple domains are registered to the same account, or the same details are registered on multiple accounts, Google can check this out for spamming. For the best search engine optimisation plan, keep your domain/s clean, and don’t have more sites than you can comfortably handle.
