What Energy Saving Devices Can I use at Home?
|
Very nearly, everybody is going on about being Green. “Eco” this, “recycle” that and there are even television shows about people "Greening" their homes and businesses to their fullest potentials. Popular cultures aside, what can you do in your own home? What energy saving devices can you use to "Green" your flat? Well you could take your cue from Google. Yes, the internet search giant. You see, Google believes very strongly in this very same issue and their major effort right now is the smart grid. Without going into details about all that is entailed suffice it to say that the smart grid means not just burning up electricity willy-nilly but tracking usage and adapting your use patterns to use electricity more efficiently as well.
Well, because you are most likely not the richest person in the world, there are some products that you can look at now to help you get on the 21st century eco-train. They are Wattson and Efergy Elite. These are home electricity monitoring devices. The big difference is that they give you the ability to monitor you homes real-time power usage and depending on what you opt for, you can even use it to monitor your solar panels as well as a wind turbine. These are wireless technologies so installation is easier than you would think.
The Efergy Elite is a perfect, simple to use tool to manage your electricity usage. With separate monitoring for regular and economy 7 if you require dual tariff you will have an accurate reading of your power usage in either Kwh's or Pounds. The unit can switch view modes instantly should you need to track both values and there is a history function as well that will allow you to see past use patterns. This is a very modestly priced unit so you need not worry about the cost of getting started. However, the ease of installation combined with simplicity and modest price make this ideal for the starter home or flat, or as a gift, perhaps?
The Wattson is a very powerful and adaptable power use monitoring system using simple, clip-on sensor technology and wireless transmission of data to the receiver/display unit. Although the cost is higher than the Efergy Elite this unit has a sophisticated software package, called "Holmes" of course, that will take input from multiple sensors and keep track of the separate data. This means that if you have a solar panel that is generating power you can attach an extra clip-on sensor to the live cable and Wattson will meter your production and show you your power consumed and power produced.
The software will also keep a history of your data on your home computer, or a small business computer for long-term performance analysis. The Wattson can measure one, two or three phase power (with additional clip-ons) and runs on standard batteries. Holmes is Mac or PC compatible and attachments are via standard USB cable. This unit is perfect for the larger suburban home or small business and both are available online.
