Search engine optimisation services – in-house or outsourced?
|
Most e-commerce traders know the importance of search engine optimisation to their company. No matter how brilliant the site or product, if people can’t find it easily, they won’t be buying. But getting high rankings means more than using keyword-rich content on your site. You need the right search engine optimisation tools, and a full-time SEO specialist to use them in a way that will benefit your company and repay the outlay.
It’s a mistake to hand the job over to someone in-house with little specialist experience. They can do untold damage, and may even get your site banned. Many a search engine optimization company has had to undo the work of an in-house amateur before they ever start building a reputation with the search engines. It often starts with getting penalties lifted.
Assuming you’ve found someone experienced in providing SEO services locally, the next question is – do you use them, or outsource to an online search engine optimisation company? For a small business, the latter is invariably the less costly option. Online SEO services have low overheads, and can afford the most up-to-date and cutting-edge SEO tools. This isn’t to say an in-house SEO specialist won’t provide the same quality, and there is some benefit in having someone you can talk to at close quarters, but since search engine optimization is, by its very nature, a remote concept you can afford to shop around.
One important thing to remember is to use a search engine optimization company based in the UK (if that’s where your business is located). A large number of SEO firms are based in the US, and therefore use American marketing strategies. While this may work in getting your site a high placement, it might not necessarily lead to an increase in sales. British consumers search differently to US clients. That being said, your SEO company should know how to attract customers from a global network if your product or service is exported abroad.
Search engine optimization services don’t have to cost the earth, so shop around. Ideally, you need someone with at least 3 – 5 years experience in the field, but don’t neglect the recently-formed company who have a team of long-term experts. Similarly, don’t neglect the sole trader who has “set up shop” alone. In both cases, credentials and experience are what matters. In general, though, a company using the small team approach will have a broader range of experience than a single-trader (or in-house specialist).
Be wary of using large companies offering SEO services at suspiciously low rates – especially if they haven’t been in business very long. They could be the best thing since sliced bread – or they could be the worst choice you’ve ever made. So do plenty of research to ensure the CEO doesn’t have a string of previous company names to his bow. Remember, if a search engine optimization company does a bad job – it’s money lost.
Overall, the costs of using a search engine optimisation company with a good track record are more than offset by the increased revenue it will bring your own website. |
