Are Energy Saving Bulbs Dangerous?
|
There has been a great deal of furore in the press about the possible dangers that lurk in the seemingly innocent energy saving light bulb. This has lead to many households stockpiling traditional light bulbs out of fear that they will soon no longer be able to get their hands on ‘ordinary bulbs’ and that by helping the environment by using energy saving alternatives they would be putting themselves and their families at risk. And since we will all look to protect out families above anything else, surely this is a logical step to take?
Well, not really. After all, there is a furore in the press about something different everyday. Some tabloids would happily try and find the negative side in a story about a heroic feat of bravery if they believed that it might sell more papers. No one and nothing is safe from the ubiquitous glare of the media, and the majority of stories we read whilst we ingest our cornflakes involve everything from exaggeration through to utter fabrication with great dollop of omission on the side for our pleasure.
So what is the truth about energy saving light bulbs? Whether you are looking for office lighting or home lighting, energy saving light bulbs are likely to be far more cost-effective for you to run and offer you a chance to help the environment and save a good deal of money at the same time.
So why the assertions that they are dangerous? The reports mostly stem from the fact that the light bulbs contain a certain amount of mercury. And whilst this is a harmful substance, the majority of people have a thermometer in their house and don’t think twice about it. On top of this, the chances of the mercury coming out, unless the bulb breaks are non-existent, and whilst you won’t be wanting to lick the floor should one break, it will not be hard to find out the best and safest way to dispose of a broken bulb without anyone’s health being put at risk.
Being aware that a breakage will mean that the waste needs to be cleaned and disposed of responsibly and effectively is all that it will take for these bulbs to be perfectly safe. A quick look into the ways to dispose of any broken bulbs will be all that is needed. And even then, the chances of needing such knowledge are very slim.
Should you be uncertain as to whether or not energy saving bulbs are going to be right, or indeed safe for you, don’t trust what the papers say. In fact, it is often not a good idea to trust what the papers say about anything. Instead talk to lighting suppliers and other people in the know to get a more balanced view on what will be the best lighting for you both aesthetically and financially.
The right lighting suppliers may well suggest that energy saving light bulbs are not right for you, but don’t let some provocative headlines make you worry about a threat that isn’t even really there.
