Why Do Companies Give Out Free Gifts?

Have you ever wondered why some companies give out free gifts? Are they all greatly philanthropic and altruistic, or is it all part of a bigger plan? Well, there is an old saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but in reality there actually is. However, if you are given that free lunch then the chances are that the companies who are feeding you up are doing so as a promotional campaign.

This is not necessarily as cynical as it sounds. After all, there are many ‘try before you buy’ offers that let customers test something to ensure they like it before they commit their money to purchasing it and, just like in this situation, free items - or that proverbially free lunch - is often a chance for customers to get a taste of just what that company can do.

The reasons for giving free gifts will vary greatly. In some cases, items may simply be excess stock that companies need to get rid of, and by giving it out for free they are expecting to gain favour with the customers that receive the gifts. In other cases, a free gift may simply be offered to make you want to return, or as previously mentioned simply to give you a chance to try what they have to offer in the hope you will like it and return time and time again to that business.

Every industry is becoming more and more competitive, and attracting custom is key to any long lasting business plan. Therefore, by using a loss leader, something that will cost the company money in the hope that it will bring profit in the future, the companies hope that they can snare customers to return time and time again.

So is this good for customers? Of course it is – not only are you getting something for free, but in many cases they get to see what those companies can offer and therefore make an informed decision about whether or not the company has products or services they are going to want to use. Therefore, both businesses and customers win.

There are other reasons for giving free gifts. Giving items free with other purchases may be an incentive to make customers buy higher profit items, or items they are likely to buy time and time again. They may also simply be promotional products that bear the company’s name. Promotional items are gifts that serve no other purpose for companies than to ensure that customers see their names time and time again. Again, this is not so cynical as the best companies will be offering items that the customer really does need and will no doubt use over and over again. So yet again, both business and customer wins.

For businesses, offering free gifts and promotional products will mean that you are far more likely to attract a bigger customer base, and in turn see people return time and time again. For customers, get as many free and promotional items as you can – it will cost you nothing and help you decide whether or not you want to use the company in the future.
