Pub Benches
|
It is that time of year when the promise of good weather and spirits is upon us. The sun from time to time has given us a taste of what’s to come and the occasional rises in temperature have already given us a few stolen moments of beer garden glory. Pints and ice shine in the sun, pale legs shine even brighter and there’s only one place we want to be when the sun puts his hat on; our pub benches.
Pub benches sheltering panting dogs from the heat as they lap water from ashtrays, pub benches draped with restless children’s legs as their Mothers apply the final finger of sun-cream to their noses before they dash to their flyaway footballs and tricycles, pub benches adorned with regulars and irregulars alike all united by the idyll of blue skies, cold drinks and long days. The family and friend festooned oak of the beer garden is without doubt one of the most quintessential aspects of the British summer and certainly my favourite. I believe it could certainly hold its own in a contest with hose-pipe bans for top spot of ‘name something you associate with British summers’. And if it’s NOT up there then I’ll give you the money myself.
Pub benches accommodate the great moments of summer; whether they happen around them or are simply regaled around them, if those four by two lats could talk then I think a super injunction or two may be in order. Pub benches come in a number of ranges; you’ve got your standard economy bench that will accommodate four comfortably and six if you squeeze in, these are perfect for the few quiet evening pints in mid-week with a couple of friends. If you’re carrying a few extra bodies or maybe looking to acquire some as the night prevails then you might want to get your beers down on a supreme bench nice and early; if you stick as a small group then you’ve got plenty of room and if some extras turn up throughout the evening then they’ve got a seat, it’s win/win. Now, if you know that you’re going to be the hub of a good night of drinking with all the usual crowd, the stragglers, the cameo appearances and maybe even a few surprises then pub benches don’t come more accommodating than the octagonal. With comfortable seating for eight and room for chairs to be pulled up, the octagonal is the daddy of pub benches.
