Bath Robe

I am a man who values his creature comforts. Some may call it miserable or even quite sad to start to miss your own bed after a few nights of hotel-living on holiday, some may consider it boring to stand in a club watching revelers dance, holding a jack Daniels and coke and just wishing you could trade it for a brew and some Friday night telly but not me. My home is my castle, my sofa my throne and I king of my realm; and every good king needs a good robe and I love my bath robe.
I haven’t always had the bath robe I live with now, much like a partner you have to go through many a heart-break and failed relationship to find the right one. A good bath robe feels right straight away, excellent feel, warmth, adequate coverage but it takes a great bath robe to still feel great after years and the journey to that perfect robe can be littered with mistakes and regrets. They say you never forget your first and that is certainly the case for me. I couldn’t have been any older than seven, it was Christmas morning and my family and I gathered around the tree to swap cards and open gifts with each other. I can’t remember what is what that year that I’d had my heart set on; a bike, a train set, football boots perhaps; it doesn’t matter because what I got that day was so much more. I recall clutching the gift in my tiny hands and grimacing inside at the feel of what was quite obviously clothing, I didn’t want a jumper or jogging pants, I wanted toys and games but that morning I couldn’t have even begun to comprehend what was waiting for me under that tree.
It was a predominantly navy blue bath robe with a lighter blue lining, cuffs and collars and a football emblem stitched into the left (so you knew it was a boy’s robe). Of course I don’t know where that tatty old bath robe is now, discarded to the bin many a year ago no doubt or maybe found in a charity shop by another little boy to bring more years of precocious joy.
