In today’s environmentally friendly times, using up the world’s rapidly dwindling supplies of trees on the manufacture of stacks of paper for home and office use would seem like a poke in the eye for the environmentalists. Also, the mention of ‘environmentally friendly’ stationery often conjures up ideas of poor quality porous paper, dotted with splinters of wood and coloured a slightly lighter shade of grey. It is paper however where good practice in recycling remains highly prominent. Many organisations in the pulp and paper industry work together to produce a product that helps to protect the world’s endangered forests from extinction, and develop commercial frameworks that shift production and consumption towards a greener and more environmentally friendly stance. There are also calls for reducing unnecessary paper consumption, resourcing wood fibres responsibly, the end of forest clearing, using alternative crops for paper manufacture, eliminating the use of pesticides and fertilisers in fibre production, and maximising recycling content.
