5 Things You Need to Know in Choosing a Backpacking Tent

In planning a backpacking trip, one of the most important pieces of equipment you need to bring is a good and reliable tent. The type of tent that you bring along will either make or break your trip so you really need to choose the tent that fits your needs. But how will you know which tent is right for you? Here are the 5 things you need to keep in mind when choosing a tent.

1. Type of tent - This is a matter of personal choice, and also dependent of what kind of backpacking trip you'll be doing. If you're planning on hiking most of the day and just use your tent only for sleeping, then a tunnel tent will suit you perfectly. But if you're planning on spending some time in your tent even in daylight hours then you should get a dome-style tent which has more room inside to allow you to sit up.

2. Size of the tent - This is determined by your body size and how much living space you will need. Make certain that you are able to lie down comfortably, and even sit-up if you need to. It should also have enough space for your other equipment to fit inside. If you are a person of small stature then you should get a smaller tent so you can avoid lugging around all the extra weight you don't need.

3. Weight of the tent - Keep in mind that you will have to carry your tent on your back during the day, so make sure that you'll be able to bear its weight for extended periods of time. Consider using tents with lighter aluminum poles rather than those with steel ones. If you can make do with the lighter and smaller types of tents then use those.

4. Tent Set-up - One of the most important features you need to look out for in a tent is how fast you can set it up. You wouldn't want to spend too much time figuring out how to pitch up your tent, you'll want your tent up as soon as possible.

5. Weather - Of course you'd want a tent that will protect you from harsh weather conditions, so consider the type of climate you'll be encountering when choosing a tent. If you're expecting to encounter some rain and moist ground then you should choose a tent that has a bathtub floor and a full coverage rain fly. Also choose a tent that has good ventilation to keep the inside from being too stuffy. For trips in high altitudes or places that are hot, tents made with UV-resistant materials is a good choice. When travelling to cold climates, aluminum poles work better than fiberglass ones.

In conclusion, there are only two things you need to keep in mind when purchasing a tent: Does it suit the trip that you're planning? And does it meet your personal preferences? When these two conditions are met then your backpacking trip will be a very enjoyable experience for you.
