Impress with an Online Resume

With increasing numbers of people chasing fewer jobs, it’s never been more important for your CV to stand out. Red cardboard or scented paper are passé gimmicks more likely to irritate a potential employer than impress them. So how else can you build a personal brand?

Some job seekers hire professional CV writers or create a multi-media online CV complete with video presentations, podcasts and links to websites.

While this may not be for everyone, technology cannot be ignored in the modern job market, and you need to keep it in mind whether you are producing a traditional or online CV.

For example, most recruiters put your CV into their own database and use keyword software to search for specific words in the paper or online resume. So someone filling an IT role might look for specific computer languages when creating a shortlist of CVs for a manager to review.

That manger could be looking at hundreds of applications, and may spend no more than 15 seconds on yours. For that reason, it’s a good idea to have your most important and attractive points in the upper half of your paper or online CV’s first page. In many cases, employers simply reject any applications that do not fit what they need right away.

Other good advice includes sticking to no more than two pages, using bullet points not paragraphs, and focusing on quantifiable achievements. Oh, and skip any mention of family, pets or hobbies.

If you’re considering applying with an online resume, make Innovate CV your first port of call. This company can help you to develop your online CV with a standardised template, can advise on wording and much more. Convert an existing Word CV into an Innovate CV in seconds! Learn more online.
