When a product is being manufactured, there are a lot of steps involved before it available for purchase in the market. There are a lot of raw materials and equipments that are required before a product us manufactured. As one manufacturing company cannot have all the raw materials, resources and skills required, they often source it out. They give that particular part of the work they are unable to do to some smaller unit.
They make a contract with them in which the production of a specific batch is outsourced to good manufacturing practices (GMP). The ingredients or the raw materials are supplied by originating company in an attempt to control the quality. It is this agreement having the specialised equipments, processing or raw goods, finished or semi-finished goods for some other firm that is referred to as toll marketing. There are various advantages of toll marketing. As a smaller unit is working, the main manufacturing company saves a lot of cost.
When outsourcing, (to a third world country) the manufacturer gets a better price than actually having manufactured it in the same country. There are some toll manufacturing firms that provide with a full range of manufacturing service and custom synthesis to chemical industries and life science. One can say that toll manufacturing is actually a mix of both worlds. Besides helping to take ample advantage of high level skills that are available at lesser costs, it also works well for complex and high value products.
These days such contracts are on the rise. They are not only being used for various high end products, but for other products like sports products and garments too. As it helps to reduce the cost of any product, the final product is available to the customers at a very reasonable price. A growing trend in the recent times, toll manufacturing is fast catching up with kinds of manufacturing units, irrespective of the financial and social structure of the unit involved. Working to make a product even cheaper and easily accessible, this new age concept of manufacturing has certainly changed the way things were in the past. |
