Racing BMX and freestyle BMX riders: what they can learn from each other

To the beginner the disciplines of freestyle BMX and racing BMX sometimes appear to be worlds apart. This separation however may result in some beginners being unaware of one or other of these disciplines and possibly missing out on the opportunity of exploring what might for them a more appropriate BMX activity.

That racing and freestyle have taken separate paths is understandable of course with the stunts and tricks of freestyle requiring a different focus and specialist skill set than jostling for position along a race track. Moreover, although an entry level BMX bike can sometimes be used for both freestyle and racing BMX, the purchase of a different type of bike will eventually be required; light and streamlined for racing; squat and sturdy for freestyle.

Beginners and even experienced riders can, however, gain important insights by looking into what is going on in each discipline. Firstly, freestyle and racing BMX bikes both share single gearing systems. It can be illuminating to look into the reported advantages of using different gearings in different situations (a modification often made quite frequently by experienced racers to cope with varying track conditions).

Secondly, it is worth looking at opinions on frames. Although racing BMX bike frames have traditionally used aluminium in their construction, strong but lightweight chromoly frames are also now tending to play a role in racing BMX as well as freestyle. Finally, it can be invaluable to compare experiences on finding the correct size of BMX bike for one’s height, an issue that can sometimes confuse given such variables on how often a rider has to stand when riding and how long the crank set should be. It can also be worth seeking our specialist advice at bmx.co.uk where we stock a range of great value freestyle and racing BMX bikes.
