Taming Aggressive Dogs: The Importance of Dog Training
|
Having a dog that is overly aggressive is a very daunting experience specially if you have been used to seeing exceptionally trained dogs on TV. An aggressive dog could be a fearsome sight as you would be witness to a beast whose ancestors practically hunted down other animals for food. The problem will only get worse once the dog develops into a larger, headstrong and more formidable animal.
The first thing that you need to be aware of is that you should prepare yourself emotionally and psychologically to face the pet that you once cuddled as a puppy and be ready to face it as a fully grown beast. Now, you are given two choices, the easy road and the long and arduous road. The easy road consists of bringing the dog to a dog school. It would be easy but you would have to pay for it. The long and arduous road is to find all the dog training tips that you can find and to train your pet on your own. Each has its ups and downs
The Mind of an Aggressive Dog
Aggression is primarily borne out of a vast myriad of emotions and conditions that your dog is experiencing or has experienced in the past. It's interesting to note that a lot of bad vibes could eventually lead to a dog's current temperament. In the same way with humans, dogs who feel scared, who are abused, isolated from social interaction, and neglected may exhibit the same behavior. Although, humans may tend to respond and act in a more complicated way. As the owner, it is your job to identify which particular condition is present in your dog and to find out what exactly is causing it.
Important Dog Training Gear
One of the most effective and respected tools in training dogs is the dog clicker. Before that topic is delved upon, one must be aware that clicker dog training does not merely consist of using a magical device that would instantly make an aggressive dog into a tame dog. Know that there is no magic locked within a dog clicker. It is just like other things that can make a sound. There are several other tools that you utilize to assist you in your regimen.
The main focus of your endeavors should be on creating the association between three things. The first one is to associate the sound that a dog clicker makes to something that will make the dog feel good. Your next task would be to then connect that feeling of wellness, security and fulfillment with a particular chore or action that the dog must do first.
You must understand that a dog clicker by itself will not create that association for you. The thing just creates a loud clicking sound that can be heard by the dog. Its job is to heighten your dog's awareness as if on cue to your verbal commands. In a way, it is similar to loud clapping or speaking on a microphone to boost your voice in order to get people to listen to you. In so doing, you are thus creating a semblance of a link between the auditory stimulus to a potential and incoming gratification that will be given to the dog. Afterwhich, you will then establish the causal connection, between the thing that gives the dog fulfillment to something that it must do before it gets it.
Remember these two words: association and repetition. These two important terms will then make up the base of the training regimen for your aggressive dog. Once you master the art of repeatedly connecting a dog's good emotions with the sound of a clicker, you will then be able to redirect that to a particular action or behavior that you want to elicit. Another concept that one must latch unto is consistency. Its importance is vital in strengthening the training regimen. It is through consistency, that actions and words are imprinted again and again in the dog's mind. All of these principles are grounded on psychology. Psychology introduced the concept of behavior modification programs that could be done for both humans and animals. Though not all creatures are like humans in the sense that they can create complex associations through thought, a lot of them react to input that is given to them. That simply is understood that when you do something, there must be a matching reaction to it. In this situation, an aggressive dog would eventually be conditioned or trained to act in accordance with your will provided that its expectations will be met. |
