CCTV in Taxi Cabs

Unfortunately, we now live in an age where crime and violence are part and parcel of life in the UK. After dark, and especially on Friday and Saturday nights, crime and violence is so ubiquitous that many people would rather stay at home rather than offer themselves to the seemingly inevitable consequences of an increasingly drunken and lawless British society. CCTV has helped play its part in assisting to deter and prosecute criminal acts, and this technology is now being used in an area that is a frequent target for drunken and violent acts – the taxi cab.

Ever increasing incidents of violence being used towards taxi drivers and of taxi drivers assaulting passengers has raised concern of safety in taxi cabs to new heights. The installation of security cameras in taxi cabs is now considered as one of the best methods for combating such crimes, thus providing the means for taxi drivers and customers alike to feel safe on their journey. CCTV cameras installed in the taxis monitor the entire interior of the vehicle and are also enabled to record audio footage. The retained footage is encrypted and can only then be accessed by the police or representatives of the local council.

Areas where CCTV cameras have been used in taxi cabs have considered the move a successful crime deterrent and most areas have recorded a drop in criminal incidents in taxi cabs. CCTV footage from taxis has also been successfully used as evidence in many court cases which without the footage may otherwise have gone on to be inconclusive.
